With seventeen characters factory produced, an eighteenth rumored and documented in the official catalogs and original packaging, and even-more-teenth nights & days spent thinking about, I hereby declare that collecting Lili Ledy MEGO World’s Greatest SuperHeroes from Mexico has proven the most rewarding hobby experience in my fourth decade on Earth. Tracking down and packing up and snacking in between it all, I lived to tell about it. I am pleased to present a near complete gaggle gathering.

And with all that is here, still missing are a few gloves, one belt and one bodysuit variation. Before Heath or I knew we were making this website, I sold the only Type Two Batman bodysuit that either of us had encountered. Though still here is the odd Type 2.5 Batman suit. Riddler’s belt will likely take a decade to find, and I’ll probably be completely gray before I have extra gloves.

Everybody has a Mr. Mxyzptlk in a Lili Ledy box, and even though the USA versions of Mxy outnumber the Mexican Mxys by at least a factor of 10, the Ledy is still considered plentiful. Boxes of any other Lili Ledy WGSH character are mind-bogglingly scarce, and some have yet to be found, or may never be found.

So it is with great pride and enthusiasm that we bring you exclusive photos of a never-before-seen Lili Ledy box for the one and only Super Pillo Peleador Acertijo, or Fist Fighting Riddler! On the back of the box flap, you can see the entire line of all six Super Pillos Peleadores. Did we say six? Yes. Six, though nobody has yet unearthed the Guason (Joker). However, this is awesome proof that Lili Ledy fully intended to produce him. The 1977 Lili Ledy catalog with photos of USA MEGOs instead of Ledys shows Joker as part of the lineup (though he does not have a model number, and the other five do). Until now, that one catalog is all we have had as evidence for a Mexican Fist Fighting Joker. So, the myth of Guason grows.

Jesus Magaña, the wonderful and friendly wrestling bounty hunter, is the Toy Collector Supreme who owns this prized piece of Mexican cardboard. Way to go, man! You are envied by everyone who sees this photo.

Just allow that to soak in for a moment. One. Known. Box. And yes, the original owner artfully cut it to make a display. But we’re not complaining. We are beyond happy with what we have to share here. This is MOMENTOUS! HISTORICAL!

Now, can everybody say “Purple Rubbery Accessory Belt?” Very good.

Comic art and box art genius, “The Toyroom,” made some interesting observations after checking out this page. He wrote: “I find it interesting that Riddler is paired with Halcon, simply because there are only two villains in the lot, if we include Joker (Guason). So were all of the heroes punching Riddler or Joker? Or if Joker was never produced beyond prototype maybe they’re all punching just the Riddler?” Great question! Funny to consider!

We sure do hope to find out what the other four (possibly five) Lili Ledy Fist Fighter boxes featured, since this one has been such a KNOCKOUT discovery.

We flipped when these photos made their way to us. Mexico’s toy historians know how to have a good time and remain active in their field. The Antique Toy Museum of Mexico (El Museo del Juguete Antiguo México) organizes shows and exhibits to feature some of the best heritage toy collections. Last year, Luis Felipe Portillo put on display his monumental Lili Ledy GI Joe collection (Aventureros de Accion) and it always boggles the mind.

Whether inside a Banksy & quirky graffiti’d street art warehouse or outside meandering through the plaza in an open air knick-knack market, there is no doubt that Mexico is the place to be for folks who read this blog. Pack your bags!

A funny thing happened to me on the way to the post office today. I saw this dude who I recognized from down at the tianguis, and before I could decide if I wanted to say hello, he activated a de-molecular-izing sub-sonic telepathic ray gun. The effects were instant and all I can recall is that my feet left the ground, a passing breeze picked up and then I was home with three boxed Lili Ledy Super Heroes on the shelf.

So, their gloves have still not been found, but that’s no surprise to anybody who has tried to find them. I’ve seen more capes than gloves in my time. It’s just par for the course with the MEGOs from places that have a history of fewer collector circles than the USA. But you didn’t start your Ledy collection because you were looking for something easy to do. Right?

Boxes for the Lili Ledy Heroes are scarcer than their gloves, perhaps. Except for the Mr. Mxyzpltk boxed figure who showed up in a large find within the past 15 years along with CIPSA Planet of the Apes MEGO toys down in good ‘ol Mexico, land of golden muñecas y juguetes.

The three boxed figures (Batman, Robin, Superman) pictured above share a fine condition that suggests they have been together for a few decades. They are 100% Original figures and the only non-Mxy Ledy boxes I’ve seen for sale in as long as I’ve collected them. Lili Ledy Batgirl, or Batichica, is perhaps the loveliest of all female action figures. OK, so we’re biased, extremely biased. But your eyes don’t deceive you — just look at how much yummy goodness comes in one hot package. Batichica wears a one-piece polyester bodysuit adorned with premium accessories. The cape alone is a true work of art. All Lili Ledy capes are made of a thick cut vinyl with two known patterns (striated lines and “lizard skin” lines) in original materials. It’s important to note that a Ledy cape must have one matte finish side and a smooth side on reverse. The hardly-ever-found gloves are made of a similar heavy vinyl. But when you get to Batichica’s belt, you’ve got something that is quite unique. It’s based wholly on the MEGO Batgirl belt, but is made of a much more rubbery material, similar to the original Ledy male hero belts. It’s a rare treat to finally see a real Ledy Batgirl belt.

We welcome you, friends, to the world of the Lili Ledy Super Chicas from Mexico. After Ledy’s success with the Super Heroes, the lady Ledys were inevitable. Each comes with her own lovely style and charm. Please be advised they come with a warning: All of them are extremely rare and very addictive. If you lack patience and perseverance, then completing an original set is not for you.

As if Batchica weren’t enough of a treat . . .

Gentlemen do prefer blondes, so here’s lovely Super Chica #2 – - Superniña, the Mexican Supergirl. Superniña comes in a one-piece all-polyester bodysuit. She also is complete with quite a few tough-to-find accessories. First, let’s discuss her choice of belts. Like a few of her Type 1 Ledy male counterparts, she’s seen more with a yellow crushed velour belt.  On rare occasions, and we are talking blood rare, she may be seen with a braided stretch belt with an unbelievably cool metal buckle. This is a running change in the production of the character to make her more accurate. Her cape is very similar to the vinyl Ledy Superman cape in color, but it is shorter and cut angling up from the bottom edges. Superniña’s cape is sometimes seen with a “lizard skin” texture similar to the Batichica cape. Perhaps there are more cape variations to be discovered, but at this time, we have acknowledged the originality of the matte/smooth vinyl feel with either a striated or lizard pattern. (NOTE: If you find an original Lili Ledy cape with a rip in back, buy it anyhow. Bunches of them appear that way. Just be thankful you found anything!) Also worth pointing out is that all Super Chica boots are from the same mold, but in different colors. They vary from USA MEGO boots in height, as they are shorter, and that boot height difference is true for ALL Lili Ledy boots on both male and female characters.

Boxed Ledy Super Chicas are painfully rare. Only a handful exist in private collections. If anyone has pictures of Batichica or Gatubela in boxes, their usage on this website would be greatly appreciated for the legacy we are trying to preserve here. The wonderful boxed pictures that we do have are from the incredibly amazing collection of our own Luis Felipe. His collection is a real treasure and we thank him from here to eternity. The loose examples here are from the collections of Heath Smith and Bryan Sanders. . . and we thank ourselves.

We are proud to show off the Amazon Princess Wonder Woman, otherwise known in Mexico as Marvila, La Mujer Maravilla.

We think Marvila is simply Marvelous, DAHling. There is just no mistaking her for the MEGO version. From her extra long black flowing hair to her decidedly Latin looks, she is one spicy treat. You should notice that the yellow eagle imprint on her front is smaller than those of her USA MEGO counterparts. And fine purveyors of the USA MEGO Wonder Woman will recognize a similarity in the size of the stars on her shorts to the USA Large Stars variant. Marvila has the typical “Ledy Loop” for her snapset in back, as does Superniña and Batichica.

Marvila only comes with that one-piece screen printed all-polyester bodysuit. It is unknown at this time whether she came with any accessories. Pretty much every time she shows up for sale, this is what she has. It would make since that she might have boots similar to Superniña, but none have yet to turn up wearing them

Last up in the Lovely Lili Ledy Lady bunch is the lone female of the Super Villains (Mr. Mxyzptlk and Penguin are also Super Pillos) — the absolutely Purrfect Lili Ledy Catwoman, otherwise known as Gatubela. The name just rolls off the tongue. Gato, Gato, Gato! She has Marvila’s hair with a fancy crop and also shares a simplicity in design. She is seen here wearing her all-polyester bodysuit with original hemlines showing the limbs sewn to the torso. Of course she wants to show you her tail, as any cat would. Take a look at her scratch-my-back pose — Gatubela knows how to walk the catwalk. (NOTE: Gatubela does not have the “Ledy Loop” at the snapset. The Lili Ledy Fist Fighters and a few other figures also lack the loop.)

Gatubela is accessorized with standard Super Chica boots in blue. Her MEGO counterpart comes with long blue gloves, but it’s unknown at this time whether Lili Ledy ever had gloves for Gatubela. It would make perfect sense, but none have shown to date. We’d love to get that update. They would likely either be extra Batman gloves or a different shade of blue using the same gloves molds as Batman, Robin, Aquaman and Batgirl.

Good luck completing this collection. It’s probably one of the most worthwhile and satisfying in all of vintage action figure collecting. Finding them requires a little “thinking outside of the box.” Yes, that’s right. You got the joke. A collector will probably never find a single one “in the box.”

Upon admitting to friends that you own a Mexican Captain America 1970′s action figure, you may have to wipe yourself down from the snorts of laughter. With MEGO’s early release of Captain America, the Lili Ledy release of Capitan America was inevitable, even in Mexico. Take a step back and try to put it in perspective.

In 1975, the approximate release of the first wave of Lili Ledy Superheroes, a typical American was a hysterical choice to import. With our bell bottom polyester trousers, jogging suits and gigantic collars, we should be thankful that the Captain offered the world something more heroic. Somewhere along the way, executives at Lili Ledy had to pick which action figures to manufacture in Mexico for Mexican kids to buy. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman do have worldwide appeal, but Captain America seems a bit specific.

Much of Lili Ledy’s history from these years is unknown at the time of this writing, but we can only imagine the marketing meeting on that day. In their defense, Cap had been an Avenger for a while. No longer was he the World War II hero punching Hitler in the jaw. He also partnered with Falcon (Halcon), yet another action figure produced by Lili Ledy. Many of Capitan America’s villains in 1975 were some breed of conquistador space aliens, so maybe the kids desired the expatriate more than we know. It still doesn’t make it less funny that a Mexican Captain America exists, much to the delight of WorldMEGO collectors around the world.

Each Capitan head was molded in blue with sometimes crudely painted features. It’s quite common to find them with face paint missing and blue spots shining through from underneath the paint. The “A” and wings are quite prone to paint flaking also. The eyes are the windows to the soul. In Ledy Capitan’s case, he must be really really sad. He almost has the same eyes as Droopy Dog, but is super cool in many other ways.

From the “Duh” department, Ledy Capitan has GLOVES!! When MEGO released their own version of Captain America, he did NOT have any gloves. But why? The classic MEGO oven mitt glove was there from the beginning of the line’s manufacture. MEGO Spiderman was released with red hands, and they could have taken a pair for Cap. Parts sharing was very common with MEGO.

Leave it to Lili Ledy to complete the outfit with very smart red vinyl gloves. Of course, we wish you good luck in finding an original pair. Original Lili Ledy Super Heroes gloves are so rare that they may be traded as currency on some small Pacific islands. These are the standard Lili Ledy Super Hero gloves in red. Like his boots, Lili Ledy Capitan also shares his gloves with Ledy Robin.

Ya got a pair of these gloves lying around? For Cap or for Robin? Oh, how they are needed. Please review the WorldMEGO Accessory Check WMAC for examples. The gloves are nice, yes, but let’s talk about what Cap is all about….the Shield!!!

Lili Ledy Capitan America holds the distinction of being one of only two Ledy Super Heroes to have an accessory for a purpose other than wearing the correct clothing. The other is Ledy Green Arrow (Flecha Verde) with his brown bow. Cap could never be complete without his indestructible shield. The Lili Ledy Capitan Shield appears to be made in the same fashion as the MEGO Captain America shield. It’s a simple molded plastic design with an emblem sticker. If there’s any major differences between the two, it’s not really known at this time. Once again, originals are rare as hen’s teeth.

Normal Dark Blue Version of Type 1 Capitan America. The all-cotton bodysuits were quite quick to lose their colors. It's somewhat unusual to find any Type 1 bodysuit with its original color.

Lili Ledy Capitan America was popular in Mexico. How do we know? It’s evidenced by his early and later suit variations. Cap was first produced in the very unique and wonderful Type 1 all-cotton suit, all of which have a bit more hand-crafted appeal, almost like folk art. The final bodysuit variations resembled MEGO in both material and cut.

From all of us here at WorldMEGO and our WorldMEGOheads, we say Thank you to all those 1970′s Mexican kiddies. Despite what your friends said, you were still going to play with Captain America. You knew that if you were teased, a shield to the face would explain everything.

Ledy Capitan America in Faded Type 1 Bodysuit. As mentioned, the Type 1 Ledy bodysuits are quite prone to fade. For some collectors, this increases the desirability and is sometimes treated as a unique variation.

Back of Light Blue Type 1 Capitan America and tight buns. As evidenced by the wrist rivets, each Type 1 bodysuit is on a Lili Ledy Standard Male body. These were designed to resemble the early Type 1 MEGO bodies.

Type 3 Polyester Bodysuit for Capitan America. Lili Ledy Cap is by no means easy to find, but usually this is the variation seen. The bodysuit was designed heavily around the MEGO Captain America bodysuit with some slight differences. As you can see, the red and white stripes in the midriff use a much looser weave than MEGO.

The Type 3 bodysuits all have full length sleeves and are mostly polyester. As always the viewer can click any picture to Supersize it.

When you first start collecting Lili Ledy WGSH figures, you might chance upon some brow-beaten dudes who someone called Superman. And to be fair, it’s not much more than a curl in front and a hairbrush style on top that separates Shazam’s head sculpt from Superman’s in LedyLand.

But Shazam’s name troubles run much deeper than this. Their origins are from within the comics from whence he came.

S The wisdom of Solomon;

H The strength of Hercules;

A The stamina of Atlas;

Z The power of Zeus;

A The courage of Achilles;

M The speed of Mercury.

Like Frankenstein’s monster, Shazam is often called by the wrong name. The wizard called upon to give Billy Batson (Memo Batson in Mexico) his amazing powers is named Shazam. The hero that we casually call Shazam is actually Captain Marvel. Shakespeare wondered what was so special about a name when Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet were kept apart because of their warring families. So, what’s in a name?

Well, Captain Marvel was the most popular comic of the 1940s, even surpassing Superman in sales. In the 1950s, Fawcett Comics ceased production of all Captain Marvel publications due in part to a copyright infringement from DC Comics which alleged that Captain Marvel was an infringement on Superman. In the 1970s, DC Comics licensed Captain Marvel and returned him to publication, but the name had already been taken. During all of this, Marvel Comics had already trademarked the name Captain Marvel for one of their own characters. So, what to do? DC used the name Shazam instead. Whew, confused yet? There’s more.

Which nickname best suits Shazam, err Captain Marvel? Ask fans of the character and he’s known as “The Big Red Cheese.” This was first coined by arch-nemesis Dr. Sivana in the 1940s. And what a great nickname for a Superhero! With his boy scout sensibilities and hoop cheese outfit, the name really fits. But if you ask the publishers, he’s boldly known as “The World’s Mightiest Mortal.”

Are you getting a sense of Shazam/Captain Marvel’s importance now? He’s an enduring character with legions of fans. With only 18, possibly 19, characters released for the Lili Ledy Super Heroes line, Shazam made the cut. Not only was he included, but apparently Mexican kids made him popular enough to see 3 different outfit changes. Each outfit is a little different from the last. There’s a lot to be said for continuity, so each outfit will have its own new name.

The hard-to-find early Type 1 bodysuits were made from cotton and many of them are found with significant color fading. They are a wonder to behold. Tight fitting and full of charm, here's the Type 1 Faded suit. Boy, that collar is far out! We sure looked in a lot of places to find this particular figure.

On this rear view of the Type 1 Faded Suit, you can see the active color fade. It is more typical to see the splotches of the darker color in hard-to-reach spots like inside a boot or in an armpit. The splotches here are unusual. The synthetic velvet accessories are separate from the outfit.

This is possibly the closest representation of the actual character. We're calling this one the Type 3 Intermediate Suit, and it is an oddball in the Lili Ledy Universe. The reason for the oddball theory: This guy was found with his fuzzy cuffs properly attached and a belt that left behind an imprint that only years of wear can create.

It's also odd because the synthetic velour belts were replaced with rubbery ones by the time the Type 3 suits were released. Now perhaps the belt came from Robin and was a stand-in, but the stitch on those cuffs gives a ray of hope on the oddball theory. The boots for all 3 versions are Lili Ledy Hero boots cast in yellow.

Here you have the Final version of Ledy Shazam and also the most plentiful, and naturally, that is a relative term. If your knees get weak when you stare at a rubbery accessory belt, raise your hand. We'll call this one the Type 3 Common Suit. Each Lili Ledy Shazam sports a yellow vinyl cape similar in length to the Lili Ledy Superman cape. All variations of Ledy Shazam also utilize a standard Lili Ledy male body with metal rivets. Hey, has anyone ever noticed that you can bend a Ledy arm at the elbow in both directions? Try it!

Shazam's popularity likely did not surpass Batman nor Robin as Ledy figures, because we have yet to see any Shazam Type 3 Common suits that lack the snap set, while Robin so far has the record for the number of appearances with that variation. It has been postulated within the halls of WorldMEGO that a Type 3 suit without a snap set may be the final clothing production change for Lili Ledy's World's Greatest Super Heroes. As of this writing, a few examples of a possible last body production change have been located.

Just feast your eyes on this absolutely wonderful original boxed Type 1 Lili Ledy Shazam from the collection of Luis Felipe Lopez Portillo Guzman. This is what Ledy Shazam is supposed to look like without the fade. Hence, it's called the Type 1 Red Suit. Shhhhh, I'm meditating.

It's unknown at this time how or if MEGO provided artwork and style guides, though we have made contact with a graphic artist who worked for a neighboring toy company in Mexico during this era.
